SpaceX founder is the world’s wealthiest individual today

Elon Musk has just become the world’s wealthiest man, pushing fellow space mogul Jeff Bezos from the top. The founder and Chief executive Officer of SpaceX is now worth over $185 billion, as per media estimates, due mainly to the continuing increase in the share price of his electric vehicle business, Tesla. As per CNBC, Bezos, who operates Amazon.com and the Blue Origin spaceflight company, is reportedly worth $184 billion. Since the year 2017, Bezos has owned the world’s most-rich title.

Musk ended with $27 billion in 2020 then padded his pocketbook throughout the year in unprecedented fashion, CNBC reported. “Musk’s assets rise over the last year represents the quickest rise to prominence of the wealthy list in history — as well as being a dramatic monetary transformation for the famed businessman, who just 18 months ago would be in the spotlight for Tesla’s fast cash burn as well as his personal control against the firm’s stock,” CNBC reported. “Tesla’s soaring share price — that has risen far beyond nine-fold over the last year — together with his lucrative pay package have contributed over $150 billion to his current net worth.” SpaceX that is not a publicly held firm, unlike Tesla Company, had a major 2020 as well.

All told, 26 flights were launched by SpaceX in the year 2020, more than any other it has ever done in a single year. In Starship’s production, the transportation vehicle it is designing to carry people to space, Mars, and even beyond, the business has taken significant steps. Musk has already stated that back in the year 2002, he created SpaceX specifically to help mankind colonize Mars, and so to help make this possible, he intends to dedicate a significant portion of his growing money.

“About 50% of my money is meant to support Planet issues and a half to support create a self-sustaining town on Mars to ensure the continuity of life (of all the species) if Earth is struck by a meteor such as the dinosaurs or the WW3 and we kill ourselves,” Musk twitted in 2018, that he had pinned to the top of his account in Twitter.  “Blue Origin states that to maintain Earth, our home, for our descendants, we need to go to orbit to access its limitless resources as well as energy,” the core mission statement of the organization reads, in part. “Just like the Industrial Revolution paved the way to economic abundance, new communities, trade and high-speed transportation — our path to space unlocks to the gate to the endless and yet unthinkable future subsequent generations might experience.”

NASA to modify solar arrays for the space stations

NASA will begin improving the International Space Station’s solar arrays this year to guarantee that the station has adequate electricity to remain working at least until the end of the current decade. The agency reported on January 11 that it would launch the first set of updated solar arrays on the SpaceX Dragon cargo spaceship, housed in the unpressurized trunk portion of the spacecraft, to station scheduled later this year. Two other sets of arrays would fly on subsequent Dragon cargo missions, but NASA Agency did not announce a timeline for them. The arrays will be mounted on top of six out of the station’s eight current solar arrays.

Using so enables the entire arrays to be using existing arrays’ monitoring and power delivery systems, reducing the number of new devices required. In order to plan the position where arrays will be mounted, and to do the implementation itself, every array will need two spacewalks. This installation implies that the existing arrays, occupying a little more than half of every array, will slightly shadow the existing ones. However, by shielding the old arrays, the current arrays are more effective; generating more power than what would be lost.

NASA predicts that 215 kilowatts of power will be produced by the total power system if all 6 additional arrays are built, relative to 160 kilowatts associated with the current arrays. A technique named Roll-Out Solar Arrays (ROSA), created by the Deployable Space Systems will be used in the latest arrays. In a canister, the solar arrays are folded and either unfurled or stretched out, while in space. In 2017, the ROSA system was evaluated on the ISS and has now been integrated into other spacecraft, like NASA’s lunar gateway Power and Propulsion Element.

From the year 2000 to 2009, NASA built the current set of 8 arrays on space missions. As anticipated, the efficiency of the arrays is steadily deteriorating. The ISS Advisory Committee described the deterioration in the year 2018 as one concern for ISS’s long-term future. NASA is officially approved to service the ISS by 2024. Still, many proposals have been made in Congress to explicitly allow operations to be expanded by the end of the current decade.

The Agency aims to transition to the commercial space stations ultimately. Still, a lack of funds has slowed its low Earth orbit modernization program, including only $17 million in the financial year 2021 relative to its $150 million proposals. Boeing, the main contractor of NASA’s ISS, is hopeful that the station will run with new solar panels for coming years, as well as many other projects on its power grid and improvements to its communications program to expand its bandwidth.

Self-driving Electric Vehicle of Apple maybe ten years away

American multinational tech company, Apple Inc., is in the early stages of developing an autonomous electric vehicle. According to sources familiar with the developments, this project will take at least five years. The company, founded in 1976 as a computer company, is headquartered in Cupertino, California. It has incorporated Tesla and other hardware engineers’ former employees to develop drive systems, car interiors, and car body prototypes. These parts will be combined to create a vehicle. This is an ardent goal by Apple compared to projects in the previous years. In the past, Apple’s projects have been directed towards creating a self-driving system.

According to the company’s engineers working on the project, Apple could develop a full vehicle in about five to seven years if plans proceed as expected. However, due to Covid-19, employees have been working from home, which has slowed down the project. Very few are working from the offices, and the few spend less time there. The company’s goal is to develop a self-driven vehicle, which requires little or no engagement by the user. This will come at a price. However, it will be worth it, making Apple a major competitor to Tesla, Lucid Motors, Daimler AG’s Mercedes Benz, and Chevrolet.

To achieve this, the company has developed its unique software, sensor hardware, and chip technology. Like most Apple products, this autonomous vehicle may be manufactured by another motor company. This is because Apple rarely makes its products.  This is not Apple’s first attempt at creating vehicles. In 2016, the company tapped Canada’s motor manufacturer Magna International to help build an Apple speed car. These talks did not yield a solid plan since  Apple’s plan became unclear. Apple aspires to start manufacturing an electric vehicle by 2024.

After the first attempt failed, Apple laid off hundreds of workers, only sparing hardware engineers with car components expertise. This was in the period between 2016 to 2019. Apple went ahead and hired Steve MacManus, a former engineering vice president at Tesla. MacManus has been leading the development group since 2019. Together with his team, they work on car interiors, designs, car-testing, and vehicle production. MacManus answers his former colleague at Tesla, Doug Field, who now heads the Apple car project. In this project, Apple brought together former employees of companies such as Tesla, BMW AG, and Waymo. This is in a bid to make the most sophisticated electric car. Among them is Jonathan Sive, a vehicle engineer from BMW AG. Sive has also worked with Waymo and Tesla. Others include Michael Schwekutsch and Stuart Bowers, who both worked with Tesla.

Startup creates an AI system to fix the battery of electric vehicles

Artificial hardware, which is intelligence-driven, has been developed by a startup PURE EV that is incubated in IIT Hyderabad to optimize the detection and fix of defects in electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries. The next decade’s technology removes the need for consumers to attend repair centers to fix battery defects. Artificial Neural Network-based algorithms have been developed by PURE EV researchers for the device named ‘BaTRics Faraday’ that recognize the battery faults in different series and automatically repair them to the benefit of the cells’ electro-chemistry potential.

The hardware completely automates this process, and there is no manual operation needed all the way until complete restitution of capacity. BaTRics Faraday’s thorough fieldwork has also been done. For any of the five 2-wheeler models introduced by PURE EV (Etrance, Egnite, Epluto 7g, Etrance Neo, and Etron+), this device can be used. During the first quarter of the year 2021, this system will be phased out.

“The most important aspect of electric vehicles is lithium batteries. They include several lithium cells welded to attain the required voltage as well as ampere-hour (Ah) potential in series and parallel configurations. In the event of any battery failures in any of the cell sequences, the EV users will have substantial downtime. In addition, the trend of user behavior and Indian environmental circumstances put more strain on the batteries. As such, it is a very challenging job for the OEM battery to repair the defects by diagnosing and removing the faulty sequence of cells,’ stated Nishanth Dongari, founder of the PURE EV and an associate professor of IIT-Hyderabad, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

In such a situation, any breakthrough that offers certainty on the lower delivery period to prospective consumer stakeholders would dramatically raise their level of interest in this technology’s advent. Innovative technologies such as ‘BaTRics Faraday’ must be advertised for electric cars to become popular, meaning that the battery does not switch into an idling resource for EVs owners.

“The need for an hour is to create an intelligent hardware system that, by an external curing mechanism, fixes battery faults. PURE EV has created AI-driven hardware that, via an externally connected system to the battery, performs the evaluation and repair of faults in the rechargeable batteries. This saves valuable man-hours usually spent on replacing cell series as well as minimizes the “turn-around time” battery,” he said.

Massachusetts to prohibit the selling by 2035 of new gas-powered automobiles

Massachusetts has proposed a bill to ban the selling of cars driven by gas by the year 2035. As well as a New Jersey target early this year, the strategy emulates one from California, which was revealed in September. California and Massachusetts could soon follow the example of other states, though President-elect Biden’s administration has stated that he would advocate for the introduction of electric cars. Though EVs are now in the single-digit region of total sales of cars, automobiles’ sales with manual transmissions have continued to grow and have now exceeded them. Now it seems like the investments made by car manufacturers in electrification benefit from another section of the country.

With a pledge to ban the selling of new gasoline-powered vehicles by the year 2035, Massachusetts is entering California. Governor Charlie Baker has issued the 2050 decarbonization full plan that involves reducing pollution from passenger vehicles. 27% of statewide pollution comes via light-duty cars, Massachusetts reports (Vehicles meant for passengers). The aim is for the government to achieve by the year 2050 aggregate fossil-fuel emissions. The state aims to update the public charging system to consider that certain persons do not have a driveway in which to recharge an electric car and ensure that such EVs are genuinely available.

California’s, as well as now Massachusetts’ legislation, may be the culmination of a movement among states to prohibit the selling of modern gasoline-powered cars slowly. In an attempt to tackle climate change, many European nations have the same forms of initiatives. In the meantime, President-Elect Joe Biden’s administration has a proposal to accelerate automotive electrification in the US that entails substituting the nation’s fleets with EVs. In October, while falling short of a deadline, the Department of Environmental Protection in New Jersey has established 2035 to ban internal combustion automobiles.

A few of the sticker price challenges that turn off prospective customers will vanish with the price of EVs projected to hit parity with gasoline vehicles within several years. Massachusetts, as well as California, now only demands power for new cars sold by the year 2035. Used automotive purchases of petrol-powered cars will also be approved. In other terms, when you usher in the New Year come 2035, you will already have a V-8-powered Corvette. It will still take a while until the roads are filled entirely by Electric Vehicles in either province.

Scientists on the Verge of Finalizing Antibacterial Substance

Battling bacteria in space is a significant problem facing scientists. While humans need air to survive, some bacteria species do not need air to produce energy and can respire anaerobically. For this reason, scientists are investigating new ways of handling the growth and spread of bacteria while in space. A recent discovery by scientists allows a particular coating to protect from bacteria. The control mechanism is a unique chemical solution that prevents bacterial growth significantly. The material consists of a chemical substance with microbial balls with antibacterial properties.

The coating was created for glass and metal surfaces to prevent bacteria from growing on them, providing extensive protection for the long term. According to leading scientists and researchers, Sip, the film significantly stops microbial growth of bacteria, which is a significant challenge to deal with while in space.

While earth-based control methods might be useful, most curb microbial growth methods have adverse effects in space. Combustion can lead to uncontrollable flames in the spacecraft and further damage to the ship’s interiors. There is additional research on generating controllable flames. Likewise, other control mechanism like spaying is ineffective without gravity.

Despite its mundane nature, uncontrollable bacterial growth is a significant problem for space-based residence. Exponential bacterial growth is harmful to astronauts, given its propensity to seep into water and sanitization systems over time, causing adverse effects for astronauts. Bacteria infected water leads to a range of infections for astronauts that may not be treatable in space and cause complications and delays.

Likewise, the bacterial outbreaks can also cause corrosion with equipment in space. This corrosion necessitates frequent changes and repairs that are costly and its e consuming. By generating a bacteria-proof substance, scientists can provide extensive protection for themselves and the ships while in space.

However, the substance has significance in improving life on earth as well. Scientists relate that water treatment systems that frequently fall victim to corrosion have a chance at prolonged life if the pipes get treated with the substance. The development of a corrosion-prolonged water pipeline system can reduce overhead costs significantly compared to conventional periodical repairs. The substance holds much promise for maintenance and health both on earth and space-bound missions. However, scientists state that the discovery has a long way to go before being ready for industrial, space-bound, and residential use. The research is currently three years old but is soon to be launched, with space-based tests expected soon.
